D.I.Y Office cabinets

Revamp your workspace with custom DIY built-in storage cabinets and desks. Our office makeover journey focuses on maximizing space by creating a wall of built-ins featuring DIY office storage cabinets and built-in desks. With our current office lacking storage, we decided to utilize an empty 9-foot wall for this transformation.

Planning Your DIY Built-In Office Cabinets

The key to any successful DIY project is meticulous planning. We envisioned a comprehensive storage solution with floor-to-ceiling cabinets, upper cabinets, built-in desks, and shelves. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you build custom-sized wall cabinets for your office:

Materials Needed:

  • 3/4" thick plywood (4ft x 8ft sheets)
  • 1/4" thick plywood (optional)
  • 1x4 and 1x2 boards
  • Crown molding (optional)
  • Various screws and nails
  • Wood glue
  • Door hinges and cabinet knobs
  • Primer and paint (or stain)
  • Wood filler/spackle

Tools Required:

  • Kreg Jig and drill
  • Brad nailer
  • Miter saw and circular saw
  • Clamps
  • Tape measure, stud finder, and level

Step-by-Step Guide:

  1. Determine Dimensions and Design

    • Measure your wall space and decide on cabinet dimensions.
    • Sketch your design, considering frameless, face frame, or inset styles.
  2. Cut Lumber for the Cabinet Frame

    • Cut plywood for the sides, top, bottom, and back support boards.
  3. Add Pocket Holes

    • Use a Kreg Jig to add pocket holes for easy assembly.
  4. Assemble the Cabinet Frame

    • Attach the top, bottom, and side panels using wood glue and screws.
    • Include back support boards for added stability.
  5. Install Cabinets on the Wall

    • Use 3" screws to secure the cabinets to wall studs.
    • Ensure the cabinets are level before final attachment.
  6. Build and Attach the Face Frame

    • Construct the face frame from 1x2 and 1x4 boards.
    • Attach the frame to the cabinet with wood glue and brad nails.
  7. Add Finishing Touches

    • Install optional crown molding, back panel board, and bottom panel board.
    • Prime and paint or stain the cabinets for a polished look.
  8. Attach Cabinet Doors

    • Build or purchase custom cabinet doors.
    • Use a concealed hinge jig for precise installation.

Tips for Cost-Effective DIY Cabinets:

  • Consider using ready-to-go or second-hand cabinets, such as IKEA PAX, for a faster and more affordable solution.
  • Building cabinets from scratch allows for full customization and can be more budget-friendly if you need multiple units.

Our office transformation journey, from planning to the final reveal, demonstrates how to effectively create custom storage solutions. With these steps, you can transform any disorganized space into a functional and aesthetically pleasing office.
